Thawing out

I'm happy to report we made it through our bought of sickness. It was horrible, but things have been the total opposite this week. The weather is beautiful so we've been taking walks and playing outside for as long as possible.

Yesterday the kids and I decided to get some gardening done. This is my poor, neglected landscaping. I managed to kill the bushes and did hardly anything for it last summer.

About 2 hours later everything was pulled out and cleaned up. I'm planning on putting large containers with heirloom tomatoes in the spots where the bushes were. Hopefully today I can get to the other side of the garden. Its so bad I'm surprised my neighbors haven't called the authorities ;0)
As part of our summer science class we started a few seeds too.
We started Pineapple and Bonnie Best heirloom tomatoes, some sort of heirloom eggplant that came in my shipment from Rareseeds.com, and morning glories from Amber. I still have 3 kinds of cucumbers and snap peas to start this weekend.
Last night I watched Super Size Me on hulu.com. I've been meaning to watch that movie for uh, years! Lately we've been telling our kids that McDonalds and all fast food is poison. After seeing that movie I'm not the least bit sorry. I felt even better about our gardening activities for the day. =D

Wow! You are busy. I seriously need to get out there and tend to our garden. It is soooooooooo cold and I'm a big baby about cold. I like what you did with removing the bushes, it looks really nice.

Supersize Me makes me want to do one of two things:

NEVER eat McD's again.

Or

Eat NOTHING but McD's.

I cannot explain it.

Okay, this is the fourth time I am trying to leave a comment and it gets a little shorter each time. :)

Yay for landscaping! I am heading out to do some in about ten minutes. Yours is looking good! I hope my/your morning glories do well for you -- but not too well as they can be rather weedy. ;) But I love 'em anyway.

Supersize Me -- saw it a while back and while I still eat some fast food, it is very, very rare and only certain things. I was happy for the eye-opener though...

Well, I've already had the discussion with you on FB about Supersize Me (the guy and his girlfriend has another good film on living on minimum wage too), so I'll focus on the gardening! ;)

You did a great job with the weeding! Our garden beds soooo need it, but it's been too wet since we returned from vacation to do it. It's also too wet to put in our broccoli plants and new strawberry plants (we're ripping out one of the oldest beds as they slow down in their production as they get old).

I think dh needs to start some seedlings soon...but he needs to do the taxes first. :}

Hi Heidi,
I absolutely love your blog and I'm glad you're feeling better! I'm a fellow soapmaker and I see what beautiful soaps you have! I can only aspire to have the collection you do! I have a question for you: I'm interested in making a clove soap but I hear that clove essential oil is a skin irritant. Do you know if this is true? Thanks for your help!

Thanks Janet! I wish I still had such a nice collection of soaps...my soaping time has disappeared for the time being =(

As far as clove oil, it can be very irritating. I have a friend who has used a tiny bit of the essential oil but it is very finicky. It usually causes ricing and speeds up trace too fast. You may want to try something like a small amount of clove infused olive oil, or make a clove tea to use instead of plain water. I'd try it on a small batch to experiment before going all out.

If you try any of those things, let me know how it turns out!!! I'd love to hear =D

Great idea Heidi - I really like the clove infused tea idea - I'll try a small batch and let you know if I have success! I think I'll grind up some whole cloves as well...
